Klaus Mäkelä – Towards the Flame

A film by Bruno Monsaingeon
Recorded the April 16, 2024

Bruno Monsaingeon paints a portrait of the conductor and cellist Klaus Mäkelä, musical director of the Orchestre de Paris.

Meet conductor and cellist Klaus Mäkelä through the eyes of Bruno Monsaingeon. The legendary director discovered the young maestro’s genius for the first time in 2021 at a concert by the Orchestre de Paris, when he was just 25 years old. A wave of emotion swept through the hall, setting off a chain reaction. The orchestra expressed its desire to play again under his baton, and Bruno Monsaingeon decided to share the story of this prodigy with the world.
From his way of interpreting music to his meticulous approach to concerts (with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra or Orchestre de Paris) and recordings (with Oslo-filharmonien), via his personal history and his years of training (in the class of Jorma Panula), nothing is left aside in this portrait. Through his travelling and musical collaborations, the director reveals him as a conductor who is to leave his mark on the 21st century, although his career is just beginning. More than a simple subject of study, Mäkelä plays an active role in this documentary, lending himself to interviews, giving us an invaluable insight into his vision of music.
