The organ plays an understated role in The Planets, Gustav Holst’s symphonic suite composed between 1914 and 1917: its chords support the orchestra in the first movement, and its pedals provide long held notes in the fifth and the final movements, all while an off-stage female chorus sings virtually at the edge of silence. On the other end of the spectrum, it is two organs—including one Hammond—that become the protagonists of the new concerto by Hungarian composer and conductor Péter Eötvös.
