Murray Perahia strives to develop unified, organic interpretations. This is far from an empty platitude: Perahia is an enthusiastic student of the theories of Heinrich Schenker, a musicologist who believed that music is supported by fundamental lines, sorts of spinal columns located deep under the surface notes we hear. In a February 2009 interview, the pianist told The Guardian, “This is what music is about to me—these subconscious elements, things that we’re not really aware of when we’re listening on the surface.” To those who find his approach too cerebral, Perahia responds, “I don’t think the structure and logic is intellectual. I think it’s an emotional thing.”
